The earliest thing Ley can remember is the crashing of waves upon the shore. She was born alone: a single egg left in a seaside cave. With no one to guide her, all she could think to do was wander and look for food. Unfortunately, the first edible mineral she came across was a small deposit of pearls under a rock, more than likely hidden there by a Krabby. She gathered as many of the pearls as she could carry and continued on her way. With the added minerals, the protective gems over her eyes began to form, but with no parent to tell her any better, Ley had chosen an opaque gem. The next few weeks were spent blindly stumbling along the sand, devouring any sort of rocks or shells she could find in an attempt to reverse her self-induced blindness, but it wasn't until she tripped over a sleeping Basil that she was given a chance to fix her mistake.

Something told him that he should have joined the ranks of his gloriously scythe-handed brothers by now, but despite his best efforts, Basil remained a small, floating shell. He was more than old enough to evolve, with an understanding mate and chipper young daughter, it just didn't feel. . . right. Still, when a large storm wracked the normally calm stretch of ocean that they called home, he couldn't help but feel that a Kabutops wouldn't have let himself get separated from his family. There was no telling how long he floated, feeling sorry for himself and wondering where they were. He barely even noticed when a small wave deposited him in a tide pool. It was a comfortable little hole and he decided to settle down and sleep off some of his stress. He'd barely been there a day before a clumsy young Sableye kicked him in the side, picked him up, and immediately attempted to put him in her mouth.



Ley was more than happy to tell Basil about what happened and even in his current down state, he couldn't help but feel bad for her. She was loud, curious, annoying and far too naive: everything he would normally hate in a traveling companion, but she also reminded him of someone. Though he was no expert on gems, even he could tell what had happened and together they managed to scrounge up some glass leftover from a Macargo trailing across the sand. After a week of sitting in Basil's pool and chewing on the glass, her eyecovers were incredibly weak, but at least they were translucent. Basil had planned to stay in his new home, possibly sleeping for a few years and sending the young Sableye on her way. His conscience just wouldn't let him. With a grumble, he agreed to accompany her on her search for a family, something she had revealed to him while they were watching a group of Goldeen swim together in the shallows. If nothing else, at least he'd know she wasn't out there getting herself killed.
